<l>A lonely whitewashed cottage</l>
<l>Under a sandy cliff;</l>
<l>I, a child, and my cradle</l>
<l>The thwarts of the fisher's skiff.</l>
<l>Dark was the night without,</l>
<l>The winds swept over the lea</l>
<l>The cry of the curlews calling,</l>

<l>Sea-swallows nested above us</l>
<l>Silent; but all night long</l>
<l>Sleepless the cold waves gathered.</l>
<l>Pouring to night their song.</l>
<l>They sang alone in the darkness,</l>
<l>Like hooded monks in choir,</l>
<l>And the long, lone beach was lighted</l>

<l>In Thy myriad mansions blest,</l>
<l>Mother and sister are watching</l>
<l>The face they once caressed.</l>

<l>For death is only a shadow</l>
<l>Cast by Thy holy love,</l>

<l>Thy Spirit swoops to us,</l>
<l>Couched in the warmth of His shadow,</l>
<l>Winged multitudinous.</l>

<l>Yestreen I watched in my manhood,</l>
<l>To-day my hair is white;</l>
<l>I hear the eternal surges</l>

<l>From the cells of memory</l>
<l>The cry of the curlews calling,</l>
