According to Richard Butler, Pembridge and Grace both condemned this act, ascribing it to Jordan Comyn and his accomplices. These deaths were cited in the annals as examples of English treachery towards their Irish neighbours, and also in the remonstrance sent to Pope John XXII in 1317. The feastday of the Blessed Trinity had been established as a feast by Pope Benedict XI ten years earlier.
