The present text represents Wulff's Introduction and the Irish text, covering pp. 249–255, and even pages 254–282. Wulff's glossary on pages 282–286 was omitted. Footnotes are omitted. The Latin text, printed by Wulff on the odd pages, will be made available in a separate file in 2020.

Editorial Declaration


Text has been checked and proofread twice.


The electronic text represents the edited text. Where the hardcopy uses italics to denote expansions in the electronic text ex tags are used instead. However, Wulff marked only a small number of expansions of the manuscript abbreviations. The translation comprises only a small part of Lanfranc's Chirurgia Magna.


Direct speech is rendered q.


Soft hyphens are silently removed. Words containing a hard or soft hyphen crossing a page-break or line-break have been placed on the line on which they start.
