<p>In our forthcoming edition of various inedited versions of <title type="vision tale">Tundale's Vision</title>,<note n="1" type="auth"><frn lang="fr">Versions in&eacute;dites de la Vision de Tondale. Deux versions fran&ccedil;aises et une version irlandaise publi&eacute;es par V. H. Friedel et</frn> Kuno Meyer. &Eacute;mile Bouillon, <corr resp="KM" sic="1899">1900</corr>.</note> Dr. Friedel and I have purposely refrained from giving an account of early Irish visionary literature, and from touching the question of its relation to the Continental literature which culminated in Dante's poem. Nor do I propose to do so here. The time for such investigations has hardly arrived, since every search among Irish MSS. may bring new and important materials to light.</p>
<p>The Old Irish Vision of Hell, of which I now submit text and translation to the reader, has not hitherto been noticed,<note n="2" type="auth">It is duly mentioned by Stokes in his list of contents of Rawl. B. 512 (<title type="Irish hagiography">Tripartite Life</title>, p. xx), but the heading 'Legend of Laisren' gives no clue to the nature of the contents.</note> and it is edited here for the first time. It is found in the well-known Bodleian codex <name type="MS codex">Rawlinson B. 512</name>, fo. 44a1-44b2. Like so much of early Irish literature, it is only a fragment, containing no more than the introduction and the beginning of what was undoubtedly a complete description of Hell and Heaven. The MS. dates from the fifteenth century, but from the language I am inclined to assign the original from which our copy is derived to the Old-Irish period, to the early tenth or the latter half of the ninth century.<note n="3" type="auth">I am guided by the occurence, among other things, of such deponential forms as <frn lang="ga">co n-acadar</frn> (paragraph 6), <frn lang="ga">co n-aicedar</frn> (6), <frn lang="ga">crithnaigistar</frn> (2); the t-preterites <frn lang="ga">frisrogart</frn> (9), <frn lang="ga">frisgart</frn> (5) 'he answered', <frn lang="ga">targart</frn> 'he charged' (4), <frn lang="ga">targart</frn> 'I charged' (5), <frn lang="ga">tairgairt</frn> 'thou chargedst' (5); the relative form <frn lang="ga">file</frn> (1), the neuter <frn lang="ga">a tacra n-&iacute; sin</frn> 'that charge' (5), the gen. fem. <frn lang="ga">inna</frn> (7), the acc. plur. <frn lang="ga">anmann</frn> (8), the superlative <frn lang="ga">moam</frn> (5), etc.</note></p>

<p>Laisr&eacute;n is the name of several Irish saints. The most celebrated among them was the abbot of Lethglenn, now Leighlin, co. Carlow, who died in A.D. 638, and it is not unreasonable, in the absence of any further particulars, to assume that he is the hero of our Vision. The monastery of Cl&uacute;ain mentioned in the introduction may be either Clonmacnois or Cloyne. <corr resp="KM">Cl&uacute;ain Ch&aacute;in in Connaught may be Clonkeen, near Athenry.</corr></p>
