Notes

The editor notes: ‘The spelling employed in the text is in general a normalized and slightly modified form of the orthography in common use some three centuries ago. It should be carefully borne in mind that the pronunciation required in reading most of these poems is often very different from that of the Irish of to-day; thus every consonant (including dh, gh, bh, and mh) must, as a rule, be as fully pronounced in the middle or end of a word as at the beginning. On the other hand, in the occasional supplementary stanzas in accentual metre, as well as in a few of the dánta, a frankly modern pronunciation is required, and accordingly in these the orthography has been somewhat modernized. Here and there a macron has been employed to indicate that the metre requires the modern pronunciation of a word spelled in the old way.’ [T. F. O'Rahilly, p 61.]
