Why do ye torture me? (Author: Pádraic H. Pearse)

p.315

  1. 1] Why are ye torturing me, O desires of my heart ?
2] Torturing me and paining me by day and by night?
3] Hunting me as a poor deer would be hunted on a hill,
4] A poor long-wearied deer with the hound-pack after him
  2. 5] There's no ease to my paining in the loneliness of the hills,
6] But the cry of the hunters terrifically to be heard,
7] The cry of my desires haunting me without respite,—
8] O ravening hounds, long is your run!
  3. 9] No satisfying can come to my desires while I live,
10] For the satisfaction I desired yesterday is no satisfaction,
11] And the hound-pack is the greedier of the satisfaction it has got,—
12] And forever I shall not sleep till I sleep in the grave.
